Get The Look: 2012 Met Costume Institute Gala

Hey Rosés,

The spring exhibit of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Last night the stars shined for the 2012 Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual Costume Institute Gala. Each year this spectacular event, known as the “Fashion Oscars” celebrates the Costume Institute’s spring exhibit honoring fashion icons. Past exhibits have included Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, the American Woman, Models as Muses, and Superheroes. This year’s exhibit juxtaposes the similarities of Italian designers Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada, despite being from different eras, in “Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations.”

Celebrities, designers, stylists and socialites cascaded up the red carpet stairs at The Met, with many of the modeling and acting muses being escorted by couture designers. Some of my favorite beauty and fashion trends of the night included gold sequins, couture color blocking, and bold makeup. Check out my top looks:

Get The Look: Mad Men’s Mad Style

Hey Rosés,

It’s back! After almost a two-year hiatus, 4-time Emmy winning drama Mad Men premiered its fifth season last night on AMC. The sultry drama showcases a prestigious advertising agency during the revolutionary times of the ‘60s. The show is full of deception, smoking, drinks, and seduction. Scotch sipping, ladies loving, account executive Don Draper (played by John Hamm) and the stylish, sassy, curvaceous head of the secretarial pool Joan Harris (played by Christina Hendricks) returned with a drama-filled season premiere.

I not only love this show because I’m an advertising maven, but I also love the classic fashion and beauty of the ‘60s. This era shifted women’s and minority rights, raised hemlines above the knee, and released rebellious, bold music. Mad Men gives us a glimpse into the changing times, and how advertising and media fueled a new culture.

Thick winged eyeliner, flipped bobs, hip hugging pencil skirts and cat’s eye frames owned the ‘60s. To recreate your own Mad Men looks, check out these limited edition beauty and fashion collections that will give you retro Mad Style:

Estée Lauder Mad Men Collection

Purchase: $25 – 40 bloomingdales.com

Shake – Stir – Seduce with this cherry-red lipstick and creamy rose blush. The creamy satin lipstick is a stunning bright red, while the blush gives a natural rosy hue. They both come in vintage gold cases that will give you an iconic look.

Banana Republic Mad Men Collection

Purchase: $35 – 150 bananarepublic.com

Banana Republic is back with another Mad Men collection for both men and women this spring. Floral cardigans, tie-neck blouses, tapered cigarette pants, and gold embellished cocktail jewelry give retro a girly side with rose pinks and lace whites. The men’s collection has structured chino suits, framed polos, and classic argyle sweaters.

Lastly, top off the look with a popular ‘60s drink like The Champagne Cocktail, a sophisticated alternative to the office scotch:

The Champagne Cocktail

  • 1 sugar cube (or ½ tsp granulated sugar)
  • 1–2 dashes Angostura bitters (or other aromatic bitters of choice)
  • 5 oz mid-range champagne (or prosecco, cava, etc.)
  • ½ oz cognac

Put the sugar in the bottom of a champagne flute, and soak it with the bitters. Top up the glass with sparkling wine.

Get The Look: Rip The Runway Neons & Prints

Hey Rosés,

Co-hosts Pooch Hall and Selta Ebanks

Last night BET aired its annual music meets fashion show “Rip The Runway.” Previously filmed at Hammerstein Ballroom in New York, singers, actors, designers and fierce models worked the glimmering catwalk. Top artists like Robin Thicke, Wale, Estelle, AraabMuzik, and Lil’ Kim (pause for reaction) performed while models sashayed and tore down the runway.

Neons, ‘90s prints, streetwear, and futuristic fabrics were woven between the 10+ designers featured in the show. Model Selita Ebanks (sporting bangs and wavy ombre hair) and “The Game” actor Pooch Hall hosted the high energy event, and introduced us to nine themed segments. “Real Housewives of Atlanta” BFF Dwight Eubanks oversaw hair representing the James Harris Hair Fashion Group, and Cesar Torres and Patty Ambroise were lead makeup artists.

See below for pictures, featured designers, and how to get the beauty and fashion looks below:

 Fashion Freedom

L to R: Laquan Smith; Laquan Smith; Dress: Gasoline Glamour, Bracelet/Crown: Mordekai

Futuristic, dominating fabrics. Loved the long platinum Rapunzel-esque braid!

Luxe Mode

L to R: Dominique Auxilly; Dominique Auxilly; Brian Lichtenberg

My favorite combination of color blocking: neon dress with a neon lip. If neon lips are too much for you try a neon shoe.

Red Carpet Ready

L to R: Jovani; Aqua; Samantha Black for Sammy B

Aqua shows how neon and a curly side-hawk can still be glamorous, while Jovani and Samantha Black stun with exquisite feather and metallic (respectively) textures.

New Kids On The Block

L: Shirt & Shorts- Joyrich | Pink Belt- Matthew Williamson | Bowtie- Good Wood | Necklace- Suetsia | White and Yellow Bag- MCM | Shoes- Christian Louboutin | Earrings- Paparazzi Jewelry | Pink Stockings- American Apparel | Glasses- American Apparel
C: Dress & Jacket- Joyrich | Shoes- Opening Ceremony | Red Cap- Hall of Fame | Black Shades- Ray Ban | Teal Satchel- Cambridge of London
R: Sweater & Tutu- Joyrich | Socks and Stockings- American Apparel | Lime Green Satchel- Cambridge of London

If prints and neons had a baby during the ’90s, this collection would be a child prodigy. I almost thought I saw Marky Mark and Joey McIntyre walk out!

Sexy Size

Monif C; Qristyl Frazier

And not to be outdone, curvy powerhouse designers showcased their best, reminding women of all sizes to embrace style and color.

L to R: Rae, Selita Ebanks, Gabriel; Pooch Hall with Gabi; Claire with Pooch Hall

This year bloggers ripped the microphone, introducing designers and new trends! Gabifresh, Claire Sulmers of Fashion Bomb Daily, and Rae Holliday and Gabriel Williams of Stuff Fly People Like shined and lent their expertise.

Get The Look: Styled by June Series Premiere

Hey Rosés,

Welcome to the Juniverse…

 via Vh1

Last night, celebrity stylist and NYC-based fashion icon June Ambrose, debuted her new show on Vh1 “Styled By June.” Known for dressing A-listers like Jay-Z, Kelly Ripa and Rihanna, the “Curator of Style” is also a trendsetter in her own right, popularizing the turban and head-to-toe color blocking.

(2nd L to R) Rachel Roy, June Ambrose, Mischa Barton, and Byrdie Bell via StyleBistro

Her reality show not only highlights the celebrities she styles, but it also gives us a glimpse into the various roles a fashion stylist plays, from glam squad to therapist to cheerleader. In episode one, June’s mission is to re-brand starlet Mischa Barton (from tv show The OC) from being a paparazzi princess into a red carpet queen. As Misha is preparing to launch her new handbag line, June carefully crafts a comeback, sending her to red carpet events like the Style360 party and front row at the Naeem Khan Spring 2012 New York Fashion Week show. At the end of the episode, she not only successfully thrusts Mischa back into the spotlight, she taught us how to shop in our closets and quickly fix wardrobe malfunctions.

(L to R) Rachel, June, Eli

June’s professionalism and straight-forward persona is balanced by her dramatic assistants: socialite Rachel Heller, and the ambitious duke of one-liners Eli Wasserman“I can be your best girlfriend or that yeast infection that doesn’t go away.” *blank stare*
